Our History
The Chartered Institute for Logistics and Transport (CILT) was established in 1919, right after the Great War. At the Savoy Hotel in London on 3 November 1919 a group of senior transport professionals met determined to change the world of logistics and transport.
In the First World War they had seen the failures of moving goods and vehicles. Now in peacetime they wanted to create a professional body that would make a difference and set new standards. The Institute of Transport was born.
The group’s initial aims were to improve transport efficiency, enable transport integration and encourage talent development in the transport industry. Aims that we still strive to achieve today.
In 1926 we were granted a Royal Charter by King George V with himself as the Patron and the Prince of Wales as the Honorary President.
The Institute grew in importance and influence across the world. We established territorial organisations in ten countries and in 1971 were granted the name of the Chartered Institute of Transport by Queen Elizabeth II.
In 2001 we became the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport as the two leading professional bodies joined together.

Courses & Training
Generic short courses, complimentary to roles in supply chain, logistics and transportation, administration and management in general, are being offered. These courses deal with the following subjects: Change Management; Human Resources Management; Leadership and Team Building; Programme Management and Negotiation Skills; Quality Management and Risk Assessment.
Delivered by qualified tutors, and with the participation of guest speakers from the sector, these courses will contribute towards students’ knowledge coming from theory and practice, within a contemporary setting. A certificate of accreditation will be awarded by CILT, subject to full attendance.

Transport Malta
The Authority’s mission is to promote and develop the transport sector in Malta by means of proper regulation and by promotion and development of related services, businesses and other interests both locally and internationally.
Transport Malta is committed to delivering exceptionally high-quality services. This document sets out the standard for dealing with our Customers. Transport Malta is committed to continually improve on the services it offers. The Authority works closely with the Better Regulation Unit and the Commissioner for Simplification and Reduction of Bureaucracy, to ensure that Better Regulation principles and procedures are applied consistently throughout the Authority.
Malta Public Transport
We started our operation in Malta in 2015. Since then, we have invested extensively in modernizing our bus fleet making it safer, more environmentally friendly, and more comfortable. Our fleet is made up of 430 buses with the latest Euro 5 and Euro 6 diesel technology. This is a clear sign of our commitment to improving our bus users’ experience, as will have one of the most modern bus fleets in Europe.
Our buses are cleaned and maintained regularly and are equipped with air-conditioning systems for added comfort. All our buses have two doors to facilitate the boarding and alighting of passengers.
We are at the forefront when it comes to innovative ticketing solutions. We invested in a new ticketing system and launched a new bus card in 2015 – the tallinja card. Around 75% of the Maltese population have a personalized tallinja card and over 80% of our passengers use a card when traveling by bus. This was a major achievement for the country as it has revolutionized the way people buy their bus tickets.
During 2016, we launched the Tallinja App, which gives passengers real-time information about bus arrival times. The Tallinja App won the Best App Award at the 2016 MCA eBusiness Awards. With over 130,000 downloads to date, customers are finding the app very useful.
In recent years we have launched 4 Tourist Tallinja Cards: Explore Card, ExplorePlus Meep Card, Valletta Card, and 12 Day Journey Card.
Our routes, frequencies, and fares are regulated by the Authority for Transport in Malta. Following a major change to the route network in 2015, our bus network now includes over 2,000 bus stops in practically every locality enabling us to offer an easy way to travel around the islands. The company was awarded the IRU Bus Excellence Award in 2017 for transforming public transport by bus into a reliable and comfortable service for passengers.
